Oh, my! Tootletown is very dark indeed! No wonder Tickleberry has enlisted the help of her friends in her search for the light.

Returning to Cherryville, OR in March of 2016 to spend a weekend with my siblings. It will be nice to reconnect at the birthplace of the story in my novel. Another cup of tea at Chariteas in Sandy with five of the most cherished people in my life will also be a treat. I didn't grow up with them, but I will grow old with them.

"Kingdom of the Green Glass Straw" Word Art...a thoughtful gift.

Sunday, July 1, 2012

Fans have been asking me about book two. It's finished; however, the editing and publishing phase can take quite some time. I hope to have it finished shortly after I return from my visit to Cherryville, OR (the location of Aunt Emma's farm), in April 2013. Here's a little teaser from "Return of the Caretakers"....

Tom’s hand slipped from mine.  Simultaneously, the light from my lantern flashed, and then died.
I could feel the quiver in my voice.  Blackness enveloped me, ripping my thoughts from the harmless place I had been just minutes prior.
“Tom! Tom, where are you?”
I groped the vacant cavern floor in front of me, first slowly, and then with urgency.  Pulling in a long breath, I closed my eyes to try and gather my thoughts.  Something had gone terribly wrong.
My voice fell to a whisper.  “Tom, can you hear me?”

Planning a family trip to Cherryville, Oregon for next spring. I thought I'd check out Aunt Emma's mystical farm...maybe do a book signing and donate a book to the Sandy, Oregon library.  I'm sure the area has changed since my last visit in 1932. :-)

It has been nine long years since the car accident, which sent Tristabelle Kelley on a catatonic journey to to the Kingdom of the Green Glass Straw. But occasionally, Trista still dreams of the Kingdom and Aunt Emma, the doting caretaker who resides there.

Letting her mind carry her back to the day she found herself standing on Aunt Emma's porch, Trista recalls her time at the Kingdom - memories too fantastic to be real, but too vivid to simply be a dream.  Unsure of the circumstances of her arrival, Trista and her new friends soon embark on an adventure complete with fairies, trolls, a mysterious cave, an enchanted house - and, of course, the magic green glass straw.

Eventually, after Trista regains consciousness in the hospital, she learns to accept that the entire incident was induced by injuries she sustained in the crash. However, an unusual birthday gift from her grandmother shakes her to the core, sending her on a quest to investigate the Kingdom of the Green Glass Straw.  Is it just a figment of her imagination, or does it really exist? And, most importantly, how does she fit into the picture as a the Child from Another Time and Place?

What is the origin of the name, "Tristabelle."

She is named after my daughter, Tristin, who had many nick-names: Tristie, Tickles, Ten-toes, Ticky, and of course - Tristabelle!

Sometimes in the evenings, Aunt Emma enjoys a cup of herb tea. It warms the tummy and soothes the soul.

Who is Emma Lee Mumford?

No one really knows for sure. But she is kind and wise, and loves to care for children. Full of secrets, she doesn't let on, but the children believe she knows much more than she's willing to say.

She is famous for her cinnamon apple pie, "snail cobbler", and intricate stories of the Kingdom of the Fairies. For some reason, she worries when children leave the boundaries of her property, saying she can't protect them from illness or injury.

What are green glass straws?

They are mystical objects kept in a special drawer in Aunt Emma's kitchen. Made of glass and bent at an angle two thirds of the way up, they are shiny and smooth to the touch. Some children on the farm believe they are "magic"?

(Note: My husband had this particular "green glass straw" custom made for me. So, yes, they do exist!)

Why does Tommy think he and Trista aren't like the other children?

Appliances and modern machinery seem to be outdated or absent from the farm. Even the telephone in the study is antiquated. Trista and Tommy are the only children who seem to notice. They also use contemporary language and slang.

Who is Queen Faylinn?

She is Queen of the Fairy Kingdom; long held captive in an iron box, she is buried far beneath the ground in a forbidden cave.

What does the name Alvin mean in "fairy speak"?

Alvin means "trusted friend". According to Aunt Emma's mother, Matty, he is Faylinn's guardian and protector.

What is the Kingdom of the Fairies?

Aunt Emma says it's just a whimsical tale created by her mother for story time, but Trista believes differently. What do you believe?

Peanuts is a Maltese puppy. I don't think it's safe to take a small dog to the forbidden cave, do you?

Aunt Emma's Records and Journals

Aunt Emma keeps immaculate records of every child who enters the farm, and records of her ancestors as well. She believes there is a great purpose in doing so. "We are all bound together like links in a chain."

How did Tristabelle Lizette Kelley arrive at the farm?

Trista has no idea how it happened. She was driving through the countryside with her mother and sister discussing their plans for the summer; then all of a sudden, they were gone and she was standing on Aunt Emma's front porch.

What exactly is Mumford Farm?

Hmm...that's a very good question. It appears to be located near Cherryville, Oregon, but it's not your ordinary country farm. Children seem to arrive and leave under strange and mysterious circumstances. Some think the house is "alive"....that it knows and sees things.

What are Matty Mumford's Journals?

The journals are where Matty recorded her stories of "The Kingdom of the Fairies". Are they just "fairy tales"....or something more?

Do you have a guardian angel?

According to Aunt Liza, all God's children have a guardian angel.

Do trolls exist?

Some say trolls are horrid creatures who live in the deep woods and have dominion over the fairies that once flourished there.

Peter Plume......Awk!

It's important to make sure Peter's cage is locked and covered at night time so he doesn't escape.

Who is Hadacall?

Hadacall is Aunt Emma's side kick. If you scratch his neck, his belly will hum.
